Piazza Arcivescovado 13 enjoys an enviable location, just steps away from the monumental heart of Pisa. Here is an interactive guide and a suggested itinerary to explore the city’s wonders starting right from your doorstep.
Just a 1-minute walk (about 110 meters) from your starting point, you will find yourself in one of the most famous monumental complexes in the world.
Leaning Tower of Pisa: The iconic leaning bell tower, world-renowned for its tilt and Pisan Romanesque architecture.
Pisa Cathedral (Duomo): A masterpiece in two-tone marble, famous for its bronze doors and the intricate pulpit by Giovanni Pisano.
St. John’s Baptistery: The largest baptistery in Italy, known for its exceptional acoustics (demonstrations are held every 30 minutes).
Monumental Cemetery (Camposanto): A historic walled cemetery housing medieval frescoes and Roman sarcophagi.
After visiting the main complex, we recommend heading toward the historic center:
Piazza dei Cavalieri (Knights' Square): Reachable in about 5 minutes on foot. This was the political center of medieval Pisa and today hosts the prestigious Scuola Normale Superiore and the Palazzo della Carovana with its stunning sgraffito facade.
Starting from Piazza Arcivescovado 13:
Step out and turn immediately left to enter Piazza del Duomo.
Dedicate at least 2 hours to visiting the main monuments.
Take Via Santa Maria, one of the city's most characteristic streets, for a break in one of the historic cafés.
Continue southeast along Via Don Gaetano Boschi to reach the striking Piazza dei Cavalieri.
This walking route takes about 20-25 minutes of actual walking time, but we recommend dedicating half a day to enjoy the stops.
Departure: Under The Tower (Piazza Arcivescovado 13)
As you step out the front door, you are only 50 meters from the Tower. Pro tip: Take your photos early in the morning to beat the crowds and capture memorable shots!
Stop 1: Borgo Stretto (Pisa’s "Living Room")
Walking south along Via Santa Maria and turning toward Via Oberdan, you’ll reach the most elegant street in Pisa. Classy boutiques line its medieval arcades. This is where locals enjoy "lo struscio" (the Saturday afternoon stroll).
Tip: Stop for a coffee and a pastry at the historic Caffè Tripoli.
Stop 2: Piazza delle Vettovaglie (The Gastronomic Soul)
A few steps from Borgo Stretto, this is the beating heart of the city market. It’s surrounded by porticos filled with fruit and vegetable stalls and historic butcher shops.
Tip: This is the perfect place to buy fresh Tuscan products if you prefer to dine in your apartment.
Typical Lunch: Trattoria Sant'Omobono is located right here; it’s famous for authentic cuisine and non-tourist prices.
Stop 3: Ponte di Mezzo and the Lungarni (Riverside)
Crossing the bridge, you’ll enjoy the most beautiful view of Pisa, with the profile of noble palaces reflecting in the Arno River.
Tip: Stop at one of the many bars on the north bank for a sunset aperitivo.
Stop 4: Corso Italia (Modern Shopping)
Just across the bridge begins the large pedestrian area dedicated to shopping, featuring famous brands (Zara, H&M, etc.). It’s the ideal spot for commercial shopping and a gelato break.
The "Secret" Return Route:
Instead of retracing your steps, once you reach Ponte di Mezzo, turn left without crossing it. You will find Palazzo Blu (a renovated medieval palace hosting exhibitions year-round) and the beautiful Chiesa della Spina, nestled right into the riverbank. Cross the first bridge after the church and head straight into Via Roma, where you’ll find the Botanical Garden, the oldest in Italy. From there, your apartment in Piazza Arcivescovado is just a 2-3 minute walk away.
The 1+ line (operated by Autolinee Toscane, formerly known as LAM Rossa) is perfect for guests, as it crosses the entire city connecting all key points.
The closest stop to your apartment is "Torre 1" (in Via Bonanno Pisano), about a 5-minute walk from Piazza Arcivescovado. There, you’ll find Postò, an excellent spot for breakfast, lunch, or an aperitivo.
Direction: Stazione FS / South Center
Pacinotti (Lungarni) Stop: You’ll be in the heart of the riverside area, near Palazzo alla Giornata and the Ponte di Mezzo.
Piazza Vittorio Emanuele / Central Station Stop: Here you’ll find the famous "Tuttomondo" mural by Keith Haring, just 2 minutes from the stop. This is also the best place to start shopping on Corso Italia.
Direction: Cisanello Hospital (East Area)
Useful for reaching the hospital district or conference centers.
Direction: Park Pietrasantina (North Area)
Ideal if you have parked your car in the large Pietrasantina commuter parking lot.
Frequency: The 1+ runs approximately every 10-12 minutes.
Tickets: Can be purchased via SMS, through the "at-bus" app, or with a credit/debit card directly on board (contactless system).
Guest Advantage: "Staying with us means having the city's main bus line just 300 meters away, making it easy to get around without needing a car."
A stress-free way to see it all:
Morning: Visit the Tower and Piazza dei Miracoli (right at your doorstep!).
Bus 1+: Catch the bus at the "Torre 1" stop towards the Station.
Art Stop: Get off at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele to admire the Keith Haring mural.
Shopping & Return: Walk back up Corso Italia, cross Ponte di Mezzo, stroll through Borgo Stretto, and return to the apartment on foot (a very scenic 15-minute walk).
